I have been trying to cut the cable for-stinkin-ever. Everyone protested. Everyone. Now, they all want to get rid of it and I am the lone hold out.
Oh cable, why do you mock me so?
Long story short - our stinking cable bill is $118 a month. We have every channel known to man, phone and internet w/ upgraded speed. We have those things because we got a really, really, really good deal. I called and told them that I was going to leave and go with AT&T because the price was better. They gave me a rate that even employees can't get. Which if I were an employee, I would be ticked about but anyway...
If I drop cable, my phone stays at $14.99 until January and internet at $30 something? I have to call and check on that one.
If I went to AT&T, it would be $65 a month for phone and internet.
If it weren't for stinkin' T-Mobile, I could just get the internet and get rid of the land line all together.
Another option is to get the AT&T dry loop internet and get Skype for phone. At least I think Skype will work with DSL. I have to check that too. They say that Skype shouldn't replace your landline, but they say that with Vonage and cell phones, too. I'm not worried.
Speaking of Skype - Why in the heck do they make their website so user unfriendly? Really. I am not stupid, but every time I go there I end up more confused than ever. I think that Skype is $2.95 a month for unlimited calls, and then your phone number is $60, but if you sign up for a subscription plan it is $30. But maybe you don't have to pay for a number. Maybe it is just if you want a local number outside of your area? Clear as mud? But I am really not sure what equipment you need to make it all do its Skypey magic, so whatever. Can someone out there who has had more than 2 hours of sleep a night please help me?
Ahem. Anyway - So I don't know what to do. The extra money would really help fund the Germany trip.
The big reason that I am "afraid" to get rid of cable is because the idea of leaving three teenage boys here alone with no TV to watch (once I find a job) is kind of scary. We have Netflix and would get an antenna, so it isn't like they would have nothing to watch. But then I would have to buy that stupid converter box thing, too. And it isn't like we couldn't call and get cable back if we realized that we had made a horrible mistake.
Is that just a stupid reason and am I making excuses?

I went through the same thing. I argued to get rid of satellite tv, and once my dh was willing, *I* wasn't! Cable news was my weakness. But finally I agreed, and we have never looked back. Our reasoning was that we could buy an awful lot of DVDs for the same money. I can get all the news I can handle over the internet. We're doing fine without it. I say go for it! :D
